A Series of Unfortunate Events…

Due to some really unfortunate events, the Lions of Literature have chose not to continue with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Due to this decision, the club format has changed.

Jim Carre as Count Olaf

Jim Carrey as Count Olaf

The club is now viewing movies based off of books. Today, we concluded Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events¬†(2004) starring Jim Carrey as the antagonist Count Olaf.

After the movie, students were asked questions to test their knowledge on how well they paid attention to key details in the movie.

Reaction to the Movie:

The Lions enjoyed the movie and wanted to see it again. Most liked the ending, but wanted to see Count Olaf pay for his crimes against the children.

The Lions recommend this movie.

Becoming a Writing Wizard!

Today, the Lions were given the chance to use their creativity. Although, some students were apprehensive about writing the script, I think it gave them the chance to open to new ideas. The exercise involved the group to write a script. The script was freeform, but I discovered that some had trouble coming up with a concept.

So, I gave the group four ideas, that they could use to help them along.

  1. Write about a new wizard that attends Hogwarts.
  2. Write about a non living object. e.g. The moon, food, pen/pencil etc.
  3. Write a back story about Snape (or any professor at Hogwarts).
  4. Write as yourself in the world of Harry Potter. Would you be a student of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin.

The Lions will complete the exercize tomorrow and will have the chance to perform it.

Welcome To Lions of Literature: Introducing Mr. Potter!

Harry_Potter_and_the_Sorcerer's_StoneWelcome to Lions of Literature. Today, the Lions held our first book club where we discussed our next steps in improving our reading experience.

In recent weeks, the Lions will be reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and will be watching the movie starring Daniel Radcliffe. ¬†With each session, the book club will be introduced to themes such as personal growth, challenges the protagonist faces and how/if those challenges have been resolved.

So when asked what do the students know about Harry Potter? Here are some of their responses:

  • He’s a nerd (geek).
  • He is smart and has hidden powers.
  • He lived with his aunt and uncle.
  • His parents died.
  • He has a wand.
  • He is an only child, and his best friends are Hermione and Ron.
  • He is also attends a school called Hogwarts.
  • He is a wizard.
  • He is brave.

The Lions are very excited to be reading Harry Potter and can not wait to go on the journey with Harry to Hogwarts. See you soon!
